Living life for the long term is harder than many think. “A Guide for Spiritual Living” is a manual from Reverend George L. McLaird as he advises readers on how better live their lives and find their own spirit, and letting that spirit live and evolve as you do. For those seeking a brand of spirituality that cares not for what faith one calls their own, “A Guide for Spiritual Living” is a strongly recommended pick for life and living, not to be missed.

This is a wonderful book! The cover, the illustrations, the approach, the tone, and the content are all spot on. George McLaird has written a wonderful/delightful/funny/serious/irreverent/insightful/helpful book about how to grow spiritually. He could have called it A Life Manual for Growth and it would have been appropriately entitled as well. This is a book that I recommend to my patients, my friends, and to my family. This is the most positive and most humorous ‘serious’ book that I have ever read. If you are like the other 7 billion people on the earth, this book is an important one for you to read and use. George McLaird has a true gift for helping people see ways in which they can life happier, healthier, and better.

Rev. George McLaird lives a life of meditation, prayer, kindness, and gratitude not from an ashram, but down in the everyday world of mortgages, road rage, divorce, addiction, bruised egos and broken hearts. George is the best friend you always wished for, but thought you’d never find – never judging, always caring, but loving you enough to call you on your stuff. His genuine desire to be of service coupled with keen insight and wise counsel allow him to” soften the corners” of the sharp, hurtful and painful mistakes we all make, yet must examine if we intend to grow. Wise, generous, insightful, and compassionate, George makes everyone he meets feel important, valued and appreciated. I tell my friends he’s the Dali Lama in day clothes, a Will Rogers for the soul.

This stuff is so good it makes my skin tingle to read it, not to mention widens my eyes a bit, and gives me an “ooh” or a “wow” here and there. The book – and it feels like George is right there with me – gives me an experience of Truth, lifts me into new ways of thinking, and breathes spiritual wholeness into my everyday thought and action. I’m inspired with the new doors to open. I’ll be giving copies to all my friends and family.

Many people are served by religious belief/practice. Others are either indifferent or have felt harmed by religion. George’s workbook transcends either experience by creating a Guide for spiritual seeking that can deepen one’s religious practice or blazes a new trail for spiritual awakening.

There are several popular books on happiness and well-being that have helped me over the years yet George’s book really resonates because he puts one’s spiritual life at the center of understanding a practical, values-based way we can be healthy, in the fullest sense of the word, and flourish with others. It takes a lifetime of living and learning on this path to distill such an approach and I am grateful, mighty grateful, that he is sharing his approach with the world now.

The dual-diagnosis of addictions and bipolar are common, so those with bipolar, and their families will find this book very helpful. In ten years of working with these families I have witnessed the spiritual doubt that surfaces with the stigma of mental conditions, and the tragic lack of training to deal with it in the religious communities. The spiritual living described here will give many people a road back to connection with the world. This cannot be underestimated in healing individuals, families, and communities.

I love the book. I have been using it with my clients at acute day treatment and they love it. George McLaird’s A Guide for Spiritual Living is essential reading for anyone interested in spiritual growth and self-reflection. His approach is practical, wise, and inclusive. Perhaps most importantly, the book doesn’t assume a right or wrong spiritual path. As long as you are on the journey, Mclaird is there to cheer you on.
